B3.3. Case Study - PhD Student and Data Ownership
A self-funded PhD student, who works full-time while preparing her PhD gets a partial funding to cover travel costs etc. to collect the data. She completes her thesis, but doesn't use all the data that she collected. Project leader or other researchers want to use the rest of the data and student doesn't want to give it, but rather save it for possible future research of her own.
Questions:
- Do you think she should share the data?
- Do you think she has a right to withhold the data?
- What would you suggest to resolve the building tension?
