• First things to consider when you are creating Open Educational Resources

When planning to open up educational resources, several factors need to be considered, such as usage rights for materials created by others, authorship of the resource, quality, accessibility, and the handling of personal data. Plan the opening of the educational resource in advance: where, how, and under what terms of use the resource or parts of it will be made available.

Start by thinking what kind of learning material you could open. You can first open only some part of your course or material, such as lecture slides or a learning assignment. Alternatively, you can produce an entire MOOC, or something between these two. You can find examples of different OER's from the Library of Open Educational Resources.

Do you create the learning material by yourself or can you make it in collaboration with members of your own or other organization? Can you also involve students in creating process? If the OER is produced collaboratively, you must agree on copyright and use of an open licence.

Find out if your organization has guidelines for producing Open Educational Resources and follow the instructions if there are any. If your OER's are used for example in Opin.fi or Digicampus services, familiarize yourself with these instructions.
